GNT: Memorial Stone

Friedhofstraße, 39307 Genthin

Here you can see a simple memorial stone built on a small foundation surrounded by a green field. This memorial stone, placed here in 1949, serves as a reminder of the Jewish graveyard that had once existed here but had been subsequently destroyed. The original graveyard had been located outside of the city, east of Karower Street and due to necessity, around 1830, the Jewish people recieved a second graveyard site in modern day Friedhof Street. During the time of National Socialism the second graveyard site was destroyed and was turned into a plain field. The inscription of the stone says: "In 1938 national socialist hordes destroyed this grave/ It was rebuilt in 1949 by the city council/ Stop racism." Every year commemoration ceremonies are held here.
