Ehemaliges Progymnasium Genthin,Berliner Chaussee - Former secondary school in Genthin

Berliner Chaussee, 39307 Genthin

The distinctive red-brick school building in the Berliner Chaussee has a rich history. It was built in 1884 as a Progymnasium so boys could get a secondary through high school education in Genthin. Until then, there had been in Genthin only an eight-year elementary school. Following the closure in 1906 until 1923 it was used as a preparatory school for future elementary school teachers where they were given a pre-employment training for the teachers' training college. In addition, apprentices from the agriculture programme in the Winter School attended here. It then became a proper vocational school which provided until 1994 numerous vocational qualifications. The well-known novelist Edlef Koppen attended the pro-gymnasium from 1903 to 1907.
